Ventilated facade – ideas for modern buildings creation

Ventilated façade1
10.03.2018

The modern ventilated façade allows creating architecturally expressive residential and commercial buildings.

A memorable ventilated façade attracts attention to a building, highlighting it within the surrounding environment. Apart from that, modern façades enable to substantially increase the energy efficiency of a building.

Quality façade cladding involving energy-saving façade solutions or ventilated façades based on solar panels, allows reducing the heating and air-conditioning costs of a real estate object by -30%.

A modern building façade can be performed with sandwich panels or as ventilated façade. Ventilated curtain walling can be arranged using various cladding materials, such as rainscreen panels and lamellas, design profiles, low-profile corrugated metal, Cor-ten steel, solar and glass panels.

We will show you various options of ventilated facades based on implemented projects with Ruukki products, which will help guide you through the architectural possibilities and the range of ventilated façade materials.

Rainscreen panels

Metal rainscreen panels can be up to 3 m in size and are virtually unlimited in colour solutions, which allows creating unique façade design. Depending on dimensions and facing type, the price for rainscreen panels can vary significantly. In this case, the smaller a ventilated rainscreen panel is, the higher its price per 1 m2 appears to be.

If the client wishes to make a ventilated façade even more expressive-looking, metal rainscreen panels can be perforated and contain internal backlighting, enabling the building to play with new colours at night time. It is worth saying, that steel rainscreen panels are highly durable, which justifies their cost. Rainscreen panels can be produced out of polymer-coated steel, aluminium, copper, bronze, titanium-zinc, and stainless steel.

Façade lamellas

Ventilated façade of a modern building can be built using metal façade lamellas. Façade lamellas make a building look slender and modern. They are used as cladding material for ventilated façades, as well as in perforated and backlit ventilated façades. Façade lamellas are manufactured in various sizes and can be installed horizontally or vertically. Lamellas can be of polymer-coated steel with a broad colour range, of aluminium, copper, bronze, titan-zinc, and stainless steel.

Cor-ten steel

Cor-ten steel ventilated curtain walling is a new vision of atmosphere-resistant steel in architecture. A unique property of Cor-ten is changing colour in the course of time from velvet bronze to noble saturated brown. Cor-ten steel façades do not require maintenance throughout the whole useful life of a building. Due to such properties, leading architects apply Cor-ten steel ventilated façades around the world.

Design profiles

Curtain walling of design profiles gives minimalist style to architecture and creates a rhythm of surfaces. A ventilated façade from design profiles can have various types of profiling – from micro profiles to high sinusoid waves. Design profiles can be successfully combined in terms of colour solutions, which substantially broadens the possibilities for creating unique architecture.

Low-profile sheets

A modern façade can be erected using cost-effective low trapezoid profiles. A corrugated metal ventilated façade has minimum price, is highly durable and easy to install. In this case, usage of corrugated metal for ventilated façade cladding also allows creating memorable architectural solutions.

Sandwich panels

Modern sandwich panels allow creating not only highly efficient energy-saving building envelopes, but also give a façade memorable appearance. This can involve usage of a broad colour palette, a combination of various colours, as well as the possibility to apply images or arranging ventilated façade above sandwich panels.

Solar panels

Ventilated curtain walling with solar panels cladding is an optimal solution for office, shopping, public, and residential buildings. Ventilated façade from solar panels is easy to integrate with other façade cladding materials and enables reduction of costs for building operation through getting additional electrical power.

Glazed and mirror façades

A ventilated façade system with external glazing makes the building architecture look slender, and also allows increasing its energy efficiency due to application of non-transparent inner surface of rainscreen panels.
